JCU Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Scholarships for HDR candidates (Master of Philosophy, Doctor of Philosophy) are awarded annually on a competitive basis to the most outstanding applicants.
Any student that meets the eligibility criteria specified in the RTP Guidelines can apply for an RTP scholarship, however, the university has the discretion to use selection processes to prioritise specific cohorts of students, for example, students with first class honours, First Nations students, students with industry experience, or students undertaking a HDR for the first time.
When applying, applicants will be considered for all applications for which they are eligible. Applications will be ranked as per the and the HDR Scholarship Application Scoring Rubric.
RTP Scholarships are intended to support research training. Accordingly, applicants who already hold a research doctorate (PhD or equivalent) will not be prioritised for RTP funding, including fee-offset scholarships.
Core Principles for Awarding HDR Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded competitively on the basis of academic excellence, research potential, and alignment with JCU’s strategic research priorities.
The RTP is designed to build research capability among early career researchers. Preference is given to applicants who have not previously completed a research doctorate.
Scholarships support candidates whose research contributes to JCU’s strategic objectives — including sustainability, health, and the prosperity of tropical and regional communities.
JCU promotes diversity and inclusion in HDR participation. RTP funding decisions ensure equitable access for candidates from under-represented or disadvantaged backgrounds.
All scholarship decisions follow consistent, fair, and documented processes that uphold integrity and accountability.
Funding is allocated to maximise research training outcomes, encourage timely completion, and ensure optimal use of Commonwealth resources.
The base rate for JCU's 2026 HDR Scholarships is currently $36,500.00 pa.
JCU offers a range of HDR scholarships for domestic and international applicants. Each of these scholarships is available to help support domestic and international candidates with living costs while dedicating themselves to a research degree at JCU.
