Jialing Xie (China)

1. Why did you choose to study at James Cook University?

I chose to study at JCU because of a few reasons. James Cook University’s affordable tuition fee and available scholarship attracted me as I was granted a Destination Australia Scholarship. Also, prior to my studies, I worked in a remote community in the Northern Territory, where I made the decision to study a Master of Social Work (Professional Qualifying) at JCU. I believed that JCU would provide good opportunities for me to practice rural social work as it is located in Northern Queensland.

2. What has been the highlight of your study experience at James Cook University so far?

The highlight of my study experience so far is my social work placement in Mount Isa. It was a great opportunity for me, especially as an international student, to gain more understanding of services provided and how they are delivered in a rural location. I had a chance to reflect on what I learned and it was an invaluable experience, such as the knowledge that I could not learn solely from academic readings and school classes. I also enjoyed the Outback lifestyle and scenery.

3. What are your career goals?

My career goal is to work with children and families. I want to be able to provide supportive case management, build meaningful relationships with families to identify their strengths and needs and link them with appropriate resources and services. I would also like to utilise my knowledge of working with different families and advocate for better social changes.

4. What piece of advice would you like to share with any international students considering James Cook University?

My advice would be to believe in your choice of study and go for it. There are a lot of resources and information at JCU to help you to achieve a better study experience. Be prepared, get connected, enjoy the experience, and make the most out of your study at JCU.
