International student feels at home at JCU

1. Why did you choose to study at James Cook University?

I choose to study at James Cook University because of the teaching quality and the multiple job opportunities after I graduate from the Master of Social Work (Professional Qualifying). I specially choose to come to Cairns because of the tropical weather and the splendid nature. There is a similar landscape on my island, so in some way, I feel close to home.

2. What has been the highlight of your study experience at James Cook University so far?

I really appreciated meeting up with international and local students and learning about their experiences, I believe that building a network is primordial and everyone has their own interesting story, we can learn from each other. I also enjoyed my first placement; I was lucky to have an excellent supervisor, meet up with exceptional workers and gain knowledge from the field.

3. What are your career goals after you graduate from your studies?

My goals are to work as a social worker with families and communities or refugees. I previously had an international experience with refugees, and for me, it is one of the most rewarding jobs on earth: it is a rich human experience based on mutual benefits.

4. What piece of advice would you like to share with any international students considering James Cook University?

James Cook University is a brilliant university. They offer multiple support programs for international students. The International Student Support Team is always eager to organise events (retreat, award galas, regular international café meetups) and I always felt integrated and welcomed.

One piece of advice I can share, as a current international student, is to not hesitate to interact and get to know people and start building your network that will certainly help you and your future career.
