JCU

"It’s great, having free reading resources is amazing and shows the lecturers dedication to the students. It also helps us to understand from a JCU perspective what is relevant, rather than a random textbook (nursing student)."

"High quality free [JCU Open eBook] etextbooks = less stress [smiley face]."

"Having access to a free [JCU Open eBook] text book greatly assisted. The other textbooks I have had to purchase for subjects have costed me around $80-$100 which is a lot in this cost of living crisis for a uni student."

"The free downloadable text book [JCU Open eBook] made studying easier."

"I could not afford any textbooks so it was amazing having [JCU Open eBooks] free resources. I would not have been able to get as much out of my course without this service and I REALLY appreciate it."

JCU

"This [JCU Open eBook publication] has made the delivery of the course material more standardised and has created reusable digital artefacts that are deployable across a range of subjects and courses."

"The work has directly enhanced student learning experiences and engagement. The most rewarding aspect has been receiving verbal thanks from several students at JCU Brisbane who have found the resource [JCU Open eBook publication] invaluable for their studies. Students have specifically mentioned how the accessible format and comprehensive content have supported their learning journey, with many expressing appreciation for having a resource that is both freely available and directly aligned with their course requirements."

"The interactive content has fostered active learning and built confidence among students previously daunted by research. For teaching, the eBook has become an invaluable resource, enabling staff to integrate it seamlessly into coursework, thereby enhancing research literacy across health professions programs. Beyond individual classrooms, its global reach—demonstrated by over 420,000 downloads—has extended the impact of my scholarship, positioning the eBook as a standard reference in many institutions. Professionally, this initiative has elevated my profile as a leader in research education, led to new collaborations, and contributed to capacity-building among colleagues, reinforcing a culture of evidence-based practice in health professions education."

"As a Learning Technology Advisor, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative impact that Open Educational Resources (OER) can have in higher education. In today’s fast-paced academic environment, the ability to access high-quality, openly licensed content from OER repositories or Pressbooks directories has become an essential tool for educators and professional staff alike. These resources not only support innovative learning design but also align with our JCU SDG sustainability goals and the evolving needs of our learners... This [OER] flexibility is invaluable in supporting both student success and academic capability development across disciplines... In an era where information is increasingly shaped by AI, the credibility and transparency of OER content stands out. The ability to explore, review, and adapt these resources with confidence is a significant advantage for educators."

Ash Barber, Senior Coordinator, Open Educational Resources Collective, CAUL; Co-Convenor, Australasian Open Educational Practice Special Interest Group, ASCILITE and Chair, Board of Directors, Open Education Conference, 2024-2025

"James Cook University has launched forward as a key leader in the open education space with international recognition from respected longstanding organisations in the field, as demonstrated by an Open Education Award for Excellence from Open Education Global. With strong expertise in publishing OER and managing impact analytics, other institutions look to JCU for support and guidance -- which is consistently and unreservedly given.

My personal experience with JCU open education staff has been a rewarding exchange of knowledge and ideas to continue building the open education sector together. The JCU open education program makes a clear impact on its staff and students as well as those of institutions within the region and beyond. Their work is pivotal to the growth of open education and to creating an equitable learning experience for all students."

Janet Catterall, Program Manager, Open Access Australasia

"The work that JCU library has done in open education is very highly regarded by other universities. JCU is acknowledged as being at the forefront in this area... JCU is also distinguished by its high-quality processes for OER development, with resulting materials that often exceed sector standards for academic quality and accessibility... Importantly, JCU is also recognised for giving back to the sector, sharing its experiences and resources, and are well respected for the measurable positive impact these OE initiatives have had on their students."

Steven Chang, Coordinator, Open Education & Scholarship, Latrobe University and Co-Convenor, Australasian Open Education Practice Special Interest Group, ASCILITE

"JCU is clearly within the top five Australasian institutions in terms of its advancement and contributions to the open education space… and are a clear case of JCU punching above its weight with modest resourcing. My experience is that this is a result of the highly driven and persistent work of JCU Library staff who have built up significant expertise in coordinating the JCU Open eBooks program and equipping the university’s academic staff to pursue and publish these projects… I have observed that the Australasian open education community benefits greatly from JCU’s commitment to sharing its mature insights, tools, and ideas to raise the general level of expertise across institutions."

Angie Williamson, Open Education Librarian, Deakin University

"JCU is an inspirational leader in the Australian OER landscape. The OER produced are of excellent quality with innovative design... The team’s creative use of the Pressbooks publishing platform and technical skill in data analytics firmly places JCU as leaders in open textbook development. As central members of the Australasian Open Education community, the JCU team shares practice and techniques, contributing to the skills, knowledge and open practices in Library OER programs across the region."

*About estimated student savings calculations:

  • Estimated student savings have been calculated based on subject enrolment numbers in the publication year of the ebook. These savings will compound as each new cohort or academic year benefits from them.
  • A conservative average textbook price of $120 has been utilised, although it is recognised that students pay significantly more for certain textbooks.
  • The calculations assume that only one prescribed textbook per subject has been replaced. In reality, JCU Open eBooks often replace multiple prescribed textbooks within targeted subjects, further increasing the potential savings for JCU students.
