AECOM's Dr Jonathan Harris Undergraduate Scholarship

The AECOM's Dr Jonathan Harris Undergraduate Scholarship is open for you to apply if you:

• Are an Australian citizen or Australian permanent visa holder; and
• Are studying a Bachelor of Engineering or Dual Degree program with a focus in Civil, Mechanical and /or Electrical Engineering at the JCU Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus; and
• Are in your 2nd or 3rd year and have completed a minimum of 48 credit points; and
• Are enrolled full-time (min 9 credit points per study period); and
• Have a minimum GPA of 5.0 at the time of application; and
• Are prepared to undertake at least 10 weeks of paid work experience with AECOM.
• Are prepared to write a 1-2 page report annually to include photo's, highlight from studies and interesting placement activities undertaken.

The value of the scholarship shall be $5,000 per year for up to 2 years paid in equal instalments after census date of study period 1 and study period 2 the year after awarding. The final payment will be made upon confirmation of work experience with AECOM. Please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment.

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made. Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

• A copy of your academic record; and
• A written statement of no more than 500 words outlining:
  1. Your motivation for applying for the scholarship.
  2. Expectations of your work experience at AECOM.
  3. When you would be available to undertake the work experience of this scholarship.
• Resume outlining relevant work experience, awards, community involvement and any other relevant information.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.
The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquires as to the applicant's good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorization for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Introduction

This annual scholarship is a legacy to AECOM’s colleague, the late Dr Jonathan Harris. The aim of the scholarship is to support the academic development and achievement of undergraduate engineers at James Cook University.

Jonathan Harris grew up in Tasmania where his academic potential was evident from an early age. In 1980 Jonathan graduated his senior year as Dux of The Don College in Devonport. He then moved to Townsville where he completed an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at James Cook University in 1986, receiving First Class Honours and a University Medal. Along the way Jonathan was the recipient of many awards including the Allan Knight Prize for 2nd year engineering results, the Thomas Normyle Prize for 2nd year engineering results, the Kern Prize in Civil and Systems Engineering, and the Local Government Engineers Association of Queensland Prize.

This grant is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

Value and payment of the scholarship

The Selection Criteria are:

1. Academic merit.
2. Work experience, award and community involvement.
3. Motivations for studying civil engineering.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of AECOM's core business.

Application Procedures

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship will be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

• Head, Engineering (or nominee),
• AECOM Representatives.

The Selection committee will be responsible for shortlisting and/or interviewing of candidates.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the grant awardee.

Ongoing Eligibility

• The recipient must be enrolled full time.
• The recipient must undertake at least 10 weeks of paid work experience with AECOM.
• The recipient must maintain a course GPA of 5.0 or above. Where the recipient fails to meet this requirement evidence of special circumstances contributing to the reduced GPA must be provided to the Selection Committee for consideration of ongoing eligibility.

Conditions of the Scholarship

• The recipient must write a 1-2 page report annually to include photo's, highlight from studies and interesting placement activities undertaken.
• If the recipient defers their study, the recipient will no longer be eligible for the award.
• If the holder of the award takes an official leave of absence the student may apply to the selection committee for the award to be held for up to one semester. A statement of reasons should be submitted to the selection committee for review/approval.
• If the holder of the award does not meet the continuing eligibility, the recipient is required to submit a statement of reasons to be reviewed by the Selection Committee for consideration of scholarship continuation. The Selection Committee may decide not to continue the scholarship based on their review. Funder needs to advise how much longer they will fund the student if this occurs.

• A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the JCU Student Review and Appeals Policy.

Administration of the Scholarship

The grant shall be administered by the scholarships office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the grant shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the grant.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation
