Cassowary Coast Engineering Scholarship

The Cassowary Coast Region is a local government area in the Far North Queensland region of Queensland, Australia, south of Cairns and centred on the towns of Innisfail, Cardwell and Tully.
The Cassowary Coast Regional Council is looking for young professionals who want to experience Engineering in a practical, hands-on manner whilst completing their undergraduate studies at JCU. The scholars will work alongside industry professionals and learn first-hand how a Council like Cassowary Coast operates its Engineering fields.

This scholarship is subject to the provisions of the James Cook University Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy

    The Cassowary Coast Engineering Scholarship is open for you to apply if you are:

  • An Australian citizen or Australian permanent residents.
  • Enrolled full-time (minimum 9 credit points) per study period.
  • Enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering, (including dual degrees), Majoring in Civil or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Willing, and have the capacity to participate in a minimum of 8 weeks paid holiday placement (during mid-year and end of year breaks) with CCRC each year of your studies.
  • And your home address is from the Cassowary Coast Region and is one of these postcodes: 4849, 4852, 4854,4855, 4856, 4857 4858, 4859, 4860, 4861, 4871, 4886 or 4816 (excluding any non-Cassowary Coast suburbs ie Nome and Townsville). Semester address can be different postcode.

If you are a successful applicant of this scholarship  you will receive $8,000 paid in two equal instalments of $4,000 after census dates of study period one and study period two each year of award (please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment). You will also participate in paid placement with the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

  • JCU Academic transcript
  • A short written application addressing:
  1. Why have you chosen to study Engineering?
  2. How will this scholarship enable you to complete your studies?
  3. Outline your connection to the Cassowary Coast Region and intentions to return to the area (or other regional/remote areas) upon graduation.
  4. Outline your career aspiration for when you complete your degree.
  5. Discuss any plans you have already made to participate in placement activates and when you would be available to undertake at least 8 weeks of placement with CCRC in each year of your studies.
  • Proof of home address postcode - 4849, 4852, 4854,4855, 4856, 4857 4858, 4859, 4860, 4861, 4871, 4886 or 4816 (excluding any non-Cassowary Coast suburbs ie Nome and Townsville).

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to verify any information provided by the applicant.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Committee shall, in the exercise of its absolute discretion, afford consideration to the following criteria:

  • Academic merit (50%).
  • Linkage to the Cassowary Coast Region (30%)
  • Intention on returning to work in the Cassowary Coast Region or other regional/ remote areas in Queensland (20%)

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquires as to the applicant's good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorization for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

  • Head of Engineering (Chair), or nominee.
  • Member of Cassowary Coast Regional Council, or nominee; and
  • A pool of appropriate JCU representatives.

The Selection Committee reserves the right:

  1. Not to award a Scholarship in any year if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no candidate of sufficient merit to warrant an award.
  2. To award a Scholarship for a period of one or more years; and
  3. To extend a Scholarship for the existing recipient.

The Selection Committee may require applicants to undertake an interview as part of their application.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Scholarship awardee.

Ongoing eligibility

To continue to receive payments, the ongoing eligibility must be met:

  • The recipient must maintain a good academic standing.
  • The recipient must remain enrolled full-time (minimum 9 credit points per semester) in an eligible degree.
  • Successful applicants need to engage with the donor, Cassowary Coast Regional Council, to undertake placement opportunity.
    Cassowary Coast Regional Council may offer further paid work experience to successful applicant.
    Successful applicants are required to complete a student report on their experience at the end each year.

Conditions of the Scholarship

  • At the end of the academic year, a written report must be submitted to the scholarships office, the template will be sent to you.
  • If the Scholarship Recipient takes an approved [deferral of their studies] from JCU then, upon discussion and agreement between CCRC and JCU, the Scholarship may be deferred for a period of up to twelve months.
  • If the Scholarship Recipient takes an approved leave of absence from JCU then, upon discussion and agreement between CCRC and JCU, the Scholarship may be deferred for a period of up to twelve months.
  • Where the Scholarship Recipient does not meet the continuing eligibility and criteria to receive the Scholarship Funds, the Scholarship may be terminated, and the remaining funds reallocated to alternate Scholarship Recipient as agreed between the parties or returned to CCRC.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Complaints Policy and Procedures.

Administration of the Scholarship

The scholarship shall be administered by Scholarships Office of the University, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the scholarship office.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants, and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
