False coloured images

Electron microscope images are by their very nature black and white (greyscale). Popular scientific articles in print or digital media often use false coloured images. A variety of techniques can be employed to produce this effect, the "simplest", as demonstrated below, are produced by simply adding colour using digital image editing software.
