Arrow Energy-JCU Go Further Indigenous Tertiary Scholarships

Through the Arrow Energy Reconciliation Action Plan, Arrow is aiming to build mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous people and communities in a range of fields including education. As a part of this commitment, Arrow is providing tertiary scholarships to support Indigenous students to attend and complete university.

If all the statements below describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this scholarship:

  • I identify as Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander.
  • I am an Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents.
  • I am enrolled or will be enrolled in the year of awarding in a bachelor or coursework masters at JCU.

If you are a successful applicant of this scholarship studying full time you will receive $10,000 in two equal instalments of $5,000 after census dates of study period one and study period two.  If you are a successful applicant of this scholarship studying part time you will receive $5,000 in two equal instalments of $2,500 after census dates of study period one and study period two. Please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment.

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

  • Confirmation of Indigenous heritage with a "common seal" from the relevant Indigenous group or aboriginal organisation) e.g. health, education, Indigenous corporations, local Indigenous land council, legal or indigenous corporation) or where there is no common seal, provide a proof of Indigenous Heritage from a recognised Indigenous organisation on their letterhead (e.g. health, education, Indigenous corporations, local Indigenous land council, legal or indigenous corporation). NOTE: This is a mandatory requirement from Arrow Energy.*
  • A written submission of 500 words or less addressing the key selection criteria:
    • community involvement;
    • dedication and drive (e.g. leadership skills);
    • overcoming challenges;
    • career aspirations;
    • how this scholarship will support you?; and
    • please also disclose if you are receiving other scholarship funding.
  • Academic transcript - for current JCU students a JCU transcript and for commencing students a high school academic transcript.


*Students from Traditional Owner groups to whom Arrow has capacity obligations are encouraged to apply i.e. Barada Barna, Barunggam, Bigambul, Birri, Cobble Cobble, Emon/ Iman, Jangga, Jarowair/ Yarowair, Kambuwal, Mandandanji, Northern Gomeroi/ Gomeroi, Wiri, Wakka Wakka/ Western Wakka Wakka, Yetimarala.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

Nature of the Scholarship

Arrow Energy will advise the number and value of scholarships to be awarded each year. An existing awardee’s scholarship may be extended, with the value determined on a year-by-year basis.

Eligibility Criteria

The Arrow Energy Indigenous Scholarship Program shall be open for application by applicants who:

  • Identify as Aboriginal and /or Torres Strait Islander;
  • Are Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents;
  • Are enrolled or will be enrolled in the year of awarding in a bachelor or coursework masters at JCU.

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be assessed on the following key selection criteria:

  • Academic achievement (30% weighting);
  • Personal attributes e.g. community involvement, career aspirations, interests, drive, ability to overcome adversity (20% weighting);
  • Impact of the scholarship (how the scholarship will benefit the student (30% weighting);
  • Whether the student is studying in one of Arrow’s key fields (Engineering, Geology, Ecology, IT/Data, Business or Communications)(10% weighting):
  • Whether the student identifies with one of the Traditional Owner groups to whom Arrow has capacity obligations i.e. Barada Barna, Barunggam, Bigambul, Birri, Cobble Cobble, Emon/ Iman, Jangga, Jarowair/ Yarowair, Kambuwal, Mandandanji, Northern Gomeroi/ Gomeroi, Wiri, Wakka Wakka/ Western Wakka Wakka, Yetimarala (10% weighting).

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship shall be determined by the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

  • Dean, College of Science and Engineering (CHAIR), or nominee,
  • Two Arrow Energy representatives
  • **OR a pool of appropriate JCU representatives

The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award a Scholarship in any year if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no applicant of sufficient merit to warrant an award.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to awarding the Scholarship including the methodology used for ranking the applicants.

Payment

Moneys payable to the recipient of the scholarship shall be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of the respective study period. Please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment.

Ongoing Eligibility

The recipient authorises James Cook University to provide Arrow Energy with their Academic Transcript for the purposes of determining their ongoing eligibility.

The recipient must maintain satisfactory academic progress and a full time or part time study load based on the eligibility criteria of which they were awarded.  Satisfactory academic progress is considered as successfully completing all subjects in each study period of their enrolment with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0. Recipients who fail some or all of their subjects may be considered for continuation of scholarship if they can demonstrate a strong desire to continue their academic program and adhere to the recommended course of action as suggested by the academic advisors and/or other student support. Scholarship recipients should apply in writing to request continuation of their scholarship to the Scholarship Selection Committee.

Conditions of the Scholarship

At the end of the academic year, a written report must be submitted to the scholarships office, the template will be sent to you.

If the recipient of a scholarship fails to comply with any of the conditions of this scholarship, the Chair of the Selection Committee may terminate the scholarship or withhold any further payments or take such action as it may deem necessary to enforce compliance with the provision or performance of the condition by the holder.

Where a scholarship is terminated pursuant to the provisions to this clause it may, for the remainder of the tenure period for which the original recipient would have been entitled to it, be awarded to another suitable applicant.

The requirements of the Scholarship shall not make the awarding of the Scholarship conditional upon the recipient providing unremunerated services or products to Arrow Energy.

A recipient may request suspension of scholarship payments if they have an approved leave of absence from study. Scholarship payments can be suspended for up to a maximum of one year.

A scholarship recipient cannot defer a new scholarship.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the JCU Student Review and Appeals Policy.

Administration of the Scholarship

The scholarship shall be administered by the scholarships office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
