Exposure Prone Procedure Form

The current Communicable Diseases Network Australia (CDNA) guidelines define an exposure-prone procedure (EPP) as a procedure in which an injury to a healthcare worker could expose a patient’s open tissues to the worker’s blood. This includes procedures in which the worker’s hands, whether gloved or ungloved, may come into contact with sharp instruments, needle tips or sharp tissues (such as spicules of bone or teeth) within a patient’s open body cavity, wound or confined anatomical space, and where the hands or fingertips may not be completely visible at all times.

All registered dental practitioners and dental students who perform exposure-prone procedures have a legal, professional and ethical responsibility to know their infection status for blood-borne viruses (BBVs). They are required to undergo testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV at least once every three years.
