Working with Children Check –  Queensland Blue Card

The Working with Children Check (Queensland Blue Card) is a screening process that assesses your suitability to work with children based on available disciplinary and police information.  It is your responsibility to maintain a current Blue Card throughout your course.  You may renew your Blue Card up to 16 weeks before it expires and should renew it before the expiry date to maintain its currency.

To apply for a Blue Card, follow these three steps:

1. Have your CRN available for reference.
2. Register for an online account. Blue Card Services will use this account to verify your identity and obtain the photo for your card.
3. Apply for your Blue Card using the online applicant portal. JCU accepts only online applications.

Identification

All applications, including renewals and linking requests, require a Customer Reference Number (CRN) from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).  You can find your CRN on your Queensland driver licence or proof-of-age card.  Blue Card Services uses this information to verify your identity.

If you do not have a CRN, you can obtain one by visiting a Transport and Main Roads (TMR) office in person.  If there is no TMR office in your area, you can visit a Queensland Police station or a Queensland Government Agent Program (QGAP) office.

You will need to take 100 points of identification for identity verification.  Once your identity has been verified, your photo will be taken and you will be issued a CRN.  There is no cost if you are not applying for a Queensland driver licence or proof-of-age card.

Please note that your photo must have been taken within the last six years and 11 months.  If your photo is older than six years and 11 months, you will need to visit a Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads office or an alternative agency to have a new photo taken.  There is no cost to update your photo.

IMPORTANT: You will not be able to register through the Blue Card Services online portal without your CRN.

Once you have your Customer Reference Number (CRN) from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, you can proceed with the online registration and application process.

Queensland Working with Children Check application

1. Visit Blue Card Services, scroll down, select the Register for an online account button and enter the required information.
2. After completing the registration section, you will receive a six-digit registration account number.
3. Email your registration account number to healthplacements@jcu.edu.au. Use the subject line “Blue Card registration code – [insert your full name]”.
4. The Placement Team will activate your registration account number and link you to JCU.  (Please allow up to 48 business hours for this to be completed.)
5. Once your account has been activated, you will receive a text message from Blue Card Services advising that you can proceed with your online application. Return to the Blue Card Services website and select Log in to the online applicant portal. You cannot complete this step until JCU has activated your code.
6. Once Blue Card Services has approved your application, you will receive a confirmation email, and your new Blue Card will be mailed to your nominated address.  JCU will also be notified of the approval and will update InPlace accordingly.

Renewal applications (current Blue Card already linked to JCU)

Application submitted before your current Blue Card expires

As noted above, you will need a CRN and a current photo recorded with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads to complete your application.

1. Visit Blue Card Services, scroll down, select the Register now button and enter the required information.
2. Because your Blue Card is already linked to JCU, you can continue your renewal application by selecting Log in to the online applicant portal.
3. Once Blue Card Services has approved your renewal application, you will receive a confirmation email, and your new Blue Card will be mailed to your nominated address.  JCU will also be notified of the renewal and will update InPlace accordingly.

Application submitted after your Blue Card has expired

1. Follow the process outlined above under New Queensland Working with Children Check application.

Link your current paid or volunteer Blue Card to James Cook University

1. Email a copy of your current Blue Card to healthplacements@jcu.edu.au. Use the subject line “Link current Blue Card”.
2. The Placement Team will link your current Blue Card to James Cook University.  (Please allow up to 48 business hours for this to be completed.)
3. You will receive an email from Blue Card Services confirming that your Blue Card has been linked to James Cook University.

It is also your responsibility to keep your contact details up to date with Blue Card Services. 

If you change your address or phone number, you must notify Blue Card Services.

If your Blue Card is lost or damaged, you must also notify Blue Card Services.
