This is the central place for JCU staff who are looking to become HDR advisors to register for the required training that supports effective supervision and a respectful research environment.
Currently, you can register for:
- Initiate Advisor Training – a one‑day online workshop that forms part of the mandatory training for new HDR advisors. It covers JCU policies and procedures, the advisor registration process, and practical strategies for supervising HDR candidates.
- Respectful Relationships for HDR Advisors – a compulsory, interactive session that explores gender, power, relationships, consent, and ethics in research supervision, and your responsibilities in creating a safe and respectful supervisory relationship.

This interactive online workshop is designed for JCU academic and adjunct staff who are new to HDR advising or preparing to join an advisory panel as a Secondary or Primary Advisor. The session introduces key JCU policies and procedures for research education, explains the advisor registration process, and explores practical strategies for effective supervision. Participants will hear from experienced advisors and key stakeholders, and learn how to access essential resources and support for HDR supervision at JCU.

Respectful Relationships for HDR Advisors is a required session on fostering a professional, inclusive advisory environment. The workshop is run by Zoom with 20-25 participants (you will be unable to register for a session once registrations exceed 25). You will need a good internet connection, working camera and speaker to participate.
Note: The workshop includes discussion of sexual assault, sexual harassment and gender-based violence, and is designed to be completed by all Higher Degree by Research Advisors. If you feel unable to complete the workshop for personal reasons, simply contact a JCU Respect Misconduct Officer requesting a confidential exemption.
