Research Programs and Pathways

Graduate research programs

  • The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) develops high level independent research skills while making an original contribution of knowledge.
  • Master of Philosophy graduates are internationally recognised as experts who discover valuable new knowledge in their fields. The skills you develop during your MPhil will enable you to extend yourself professionally within your existing sector, or to apply your research, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to new contexts. Graduates can also continue their independent research in a Doctor of Philosophy.
  • PhD@Work candidates will build a portfolio of advanced and highly relevant research that delivers meaningful outcomes and impactful solutions to business and industry challenges while developing cutting-edge skills in problem solving, critical thinking, research design, data analysis, and communication.

Graduate research pathways

The Graduate Research School offers several higher degree research pathways designed to support candidates through their research journey.

Primary pathway

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is typically completed over 4 years, while the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is generally completed within 2 years. Candidates undertaking PhD@Work follow the same timeline and milestone structure as a standard PhD, while completing industry-focused research projects in partnership with business and industry.

Alternative pathways

Common pathways to a PhD at James Cook University include completion of an Honours degree or a relevant Master’s degree that contains a substantial research component.

JCU recognises that candidates may come from a range of academic and professional backgrounds. In some cases, applicants with relevant research training or experience may be considered for entry into a Higher Degree by Research through alternative pathways.

Applicants with significant professional experience that includes research activity may be eligible for entry into a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Philosophy (MPhil). Where research has not been a major component of previous study or professional work, applicants may be advised to undertake further preparation before commencing a Higher Degree by Research. This may include completing a preparatory research qualification, such as the Graduate Certificate of Research Methods or the Graduate Diploma of Research Methods.

Completion of an alternative pathway qualification does not automatically guarantee eligibility for admission to a HDR program. Applicants must still meet the required academic standard and entry criteria for admission.

The Graduate Research School can provide advice on suitable pathways and entry options based on an applicant’s qualifications and experience.
