2018 JCU Competitive Research Scholarships

International Applicant Deadline Extended to 30 September 2017!

Scholarships for Higher Degree by Research Candidates are awarded annually on a competitive basis to the top ranking applicants.

The scholarship provides a stipend or living allowance, in addition to an exemption from tuition fees.

The award value is $27,082 (2018 rate) per annum, tax free, paid as a fortnightly stipend for 3.5 years.

JCU Competitive Scholarships

James Cook University offers the following competitive scholarships:

  • Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships, for both domestic (RTPS) and international (IRTPS) applicants
  • JCU Postgraduate Research Scholarship (JCUPRS), for both domestic and international applicants
  • AIMS@JCU Scholarship for both domestic and international applicants who have the agreement of an Advisor from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS).

International applicants: are defined as applicants other than Australian citizens/New Zealand citizens/Australian permanent residents. Domestic applicants: are defined as Australian citizens/New Zealand citizens/Australian permanent residents or Humanitarian Visa holders. Proof of citizenship is required on application.

Application Deadlines JCU Competitive Scholarships

  • 30 September 2017 for International applicants.
  • 31 October 2017 for Domestic applicants.
  • 31 October 2017 for all AIMS@JCU applicants (International and Domestic)

How to apply

Please refer to the 2018 Scholarship Scoring Procedure for eligibility requirements and ranking method.

  1. First submit an application for HDR candidature. To do this go to the Graduate Research School 'How to Apply' page and follow the instructions.
  2. If you are already enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research at JCU, or once you have completed your candidature application, go to the 'My Scholarship Applications' tab in eStudent to submit your scholarship application.

Where do I go for help?

Applicants are encouraged to speak to their prospective Advisors regarding their intention to apply for a scholarship. Specific questions regarding competitiveness should be directed to the relevant College Associate Dean of Research Education. Questions regarding the application process should be directed to the Graduate Research School at GRS@jcu.edu.au.

A note on the Student Services and Administration (SSA) Fee

JCU competitive scholarships do not cover the University's Student Services and Amenities Fee, which applies to  both domestic and international HDR candidates. For further information, please visit the SSA Fee webpage.

JCU competitive scholarships do not cover international relocation costs to JCU to commence the research degree.

JCU competitive scholarships do not cover the cost of any type of health insurance or overseas health cover.

Externally Funded Research Scholarships

Prospective international and domestic applicants can apply for externally funded research scholarships at any time, according to the terms and conditions of the scholarship or grant program. On the award of a scholarship from the funding body, the applicant should apply to undertake a research higher degree candidature at JCU. Enquiries relating to the award of external scholarships and candidature application and enrolment should be forwarded to GRS@jcu.edu.au.
