Summary of Project

Stroke affects ~50,000 Australians each year, and this number is expected to rise over the coming decades. Current stroke treatments are only effective if administered within 4.5 hours of stroke onset, however, fewer than 10% of eligible patients receive therapy within this time frame. This study will utilise molecular and biostatistical approaches to analyse blood samples collected from participants of an ongoing clinical trial to identify molecules which alter following stroke onset. Such markers will form the basis of a rapid blood test for stroke diagnosis to speed clinical decision making and increase the number of patients receiving effective therapy.
