Summary of Project

Diabetes and its complications are the leading cause of death and hospital admissions worldwide. Although a number of health disparities exist between rural and urban areas in Australia, management of diabetes ranks as one of the most significant health concerns. Compared to Australian major cities, rural/remote areas experience two to three times higher rate of hospitalisation and poor treatment outcome due to diabetes. Despite high rate of diabetes in the rural/remote areas, there are surprisingly no special programs aimed at reducing the burden of the disease. A program that effectively manages diabetes and its complications using Telehealth could substantially reduce costs of diabetes care and may help solve the scarcity of diabetes specialists in rural/remote Australia.
