Online data storage using services like Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Apple iCloud and Google Drive etc., is more popular than ever, as it provides the flexibility to work across different devices. You may not know it, but these services can pose risks that you should consider before trusting your data and identity to them! Before loading sensitive data onto any cloud storage site ask: Who else has access to this data; where is my data stored and in which country; have there been any reported breaches of security with this service? To minimise the risks, when using cloud based storage:
Read the terms and conditions.
Use a unique password for each service.
Keep a backup of all your data in another location.
Regularly check the folders and files you have shared to ensure they are correctly shared and to the right people.
Make sure you log out of the site when finished accessing your data
Store company data on these services unless they are provided by your business.
Store personal data that you would not want anyone else to see or have access to.
