Message for commencing and returning students

You may be aware that Monsoonal rains and flooding are having a significant impact on the Townsville region in particular, but also large parts of northern Queensland at the moment. These monsoonal conditions are predicted to continue until at least Friday 8th with normal campus activity resuming Monday 11th February. The impact of runoff into the local rivers systems may continue for a day or two after that. Please take note of travel considerations to the University below.

Australian residents

If you are intending to drive to Townsville and Cairns via car you will need to note the road closures given the recent rain events across north Queensland but for Townsville in particular. Currently, the Bruce Highway is closed south of Townsville. Traffic is getting through on the inland routes and through Charters Towers. The Bruce Highway north of Townsville is also closed. Road conditions can be monitored here: https://qldtraffic.qld.gov.au/ and here: http://disaster.townsville.qld.gov.au/

If you are driving, please comply with road signage and remember, if it’s flooded, forget it.

International students:

We are aware that most students are arriving on or around the 11th February into Townsville airport, with some of you arriving earlier. The airport is continuing to remain open with flights not significantly affected – but check your airline to remain up to date with your flight status. There may be water over the roads, but you will still be able to get to Campus if you are staying at one of the Residential Colleges. The Colleges and Halls are open, and available on the phone or by email to confirm your arrival.

If you have alternate accommodation arrangements, you will need to contact your provider to ensure they are able to receive you – some houses are experiencing flooding at the moment.

Limited bus and taxi services are still operating in Townsville.

We appreciate your patience at this time as we simply have to wait out this weather event.
Please continue to monitor your email accounts for updated messaging.
