Responsible and ethical use of AI

AI tools can support your learning in different ways, but you need to understand how to use them responsibly and ethically. This page presents a practical guidefor using AI responsibly in your studies at JCU.

1

Check your assessment requirements

AI use rules vary between disciplines and subjects at JCU. Always check your lecturer's specific requirements before using AI in any assessment. Detailed information can be found in the Generative AI Use section of the assessment overview.

2

Think about why you're using AI before you start

Ask yourself whether AI is genuinely supporting your learning or doing the thinking for you. Your skills and understanding should always come first.

3

Be aware that AI tools have limitations

AI tools generate responses by predicting patterns, not by understanding or retrieving verified facts. This means they can produce outdated, biased, or entirely fabricated information (hallucination), even when it sounds confident and well-written.

4

Critically evaluate everything AI produces

Develop the habit of checking AI outputs for accuracy, relevance, and reliability. Read more about evaluating AI output.

5

Protect data and privacy

Avoid entering personal information, other people's data (e.g., health records, financial details, and legal documents), or unpublished work into AI tools. Check the privacy terms of any tool before using it.

6

Respect intellectual property and copyright

Do not upload copyrighted materials, your lecturers' content, or any third-party resources into AI tools without explicit permission.

7

Acknowledge when and how you used AI

Keep a record of the prompts you used and the responses you received from AI. In your work, clearly state which AI tools you used and how you used them. Read more about acknowledging AI use.
