There are a number of ways you can prepare for your exams. Here are some tips to help you prepare, study, stay focused and succeed.
What kind of exam?
Exams will be delivered either on-campus or online and can take several forms including multiple choice, short answer, essay style or combinations of these. It’s your responsibility to find out as much information as you can about your exam from your lecturer or subject coordinator. Valuable information is often communicated in the final lecture or tutorial.
Prepare for Exam Success
The Learning Centre has put together lots of resources to help you prepare at home for exams:
On this page you will find:
Past exam papers
Test yourself on some past exam papers for your subjects. They are available for most subjects via the Library’s Reserve Online Basic Search.
Work through these past exam papers under exam conditions – set yourself a time limit and don’t use notes and textbooks. This gives you valuable exam practice and helps highlight areas needing revision.
You can also use previously worked examples and old assessment items as practice.
Develop your study, revision and time management skills
Online modules and tips
- Be proactive, organise your information and identify gaps in your knowledge - follow the '4-week guide to nailing your exams'.
- The Learning Centre's exam preparation resources will help you prepare for exams, including information about different types of exams, how to prepare during the semester, minimise stress during the exam period, and what to do on the day of your exam.
- See Getting Started for tips on organising and prioritising your time, creating your own weekly and semester study plans, and active learning strategies.
Workshops
Check the latest on-campus Study Skills workshops.
Learning Advice Desk
Visit the Learning Advice Desk at the Townsville and Cairns libraries or contact a learning advisor via the online form.
Look after yourself
Wellbeing is a combination of your physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social health, and is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction. Student Equity and Wellbeing have links to a number of services and resources available to help you maintain your health and wellbeing prior and during exam time.
Plan for any special requirements
Do you have a medical condition or special requirement that may affect your performance in an exam? You may need to arrange, for example, for rest breaks or special seating. Please see Special requirements in exams.
