JCU Flex is a student-centred study mode which allows you to decide how you attend your scheduled classes for your subjects, regardless of whether you are enrolled as an internal (on-campus) or external (online) student.
You can choose the way you attend to suit your non study commitments and if you can’t attend on campus or online you can just work through the learning materials yourself and follow the instructions.
External study means you would normally undertake all classes online and you would not be interacting with on campus students.
JCU Flex means you can engage face-to-face on campus, or online, or you can study independently. And you can choose a mix of the three that suits you.
Some lecturers record their classes and make them available via your LearnJCU subject site. If you don’t participate in the class at the scheduled time your lecturers will ensure you have the recorded class or other videos, articles, learning materials, exercises, and instructions so that you can study independently on that week’s content.
Some subjects may require some attendance on campus, so you need to read your Subject Outline to understand the requirements of your subject including any on-campus attendance for specific classes or assessments. Otherwise ‘yes’: if you prefer independent study, you can complete the subject in your own time. If you benefit from engagement with other students before, during, and after sessions, you may still be best off coming to campus for most sessions.
JCU Flex may be available to international students, however international students are limited by visa requirements and how much study you may have already done online.
If you are an international student for SP2 2023, you will be automatically registered into the on-campus classes. If you do wish to undertake any studies online through JCU Flex, you will need to seek approval from an Enrolment and Student Support Advisor by emailing enrolments@jcu.edu.au.
In 2023 the Bachelor of Arts has been selected as the initial program for JCU Flex.
For Study Period 2 2023, the following subjects within the Bachelor of Arts will be delivered via JCU Flex.

Once you are enrolled in your subjects, you will see in eStudent under the “My Timetable” tab that you are registered into the On-Campus and Online Flex classes. Please note this can take up to 12 hours after enrolling to display.
Once the study period starts, you’ll be able to choose whether you attend that class on campus or online. You do not need to advise us if you are changing your attendance at any time – the choice is yours.
Non JCU Flex Subjects
If you are also undertaking subjects that are not offered via JCU Flex, you will need to register for those classes in the usual way. Click here for more information on how to register for those classes.
We have appropriate-sized rooms to ensure classes will run smoothly through JCU Flex. However, some classes, may have on occasion, larger on-campus attendance. If the class if full there'll be a spot nearby to engage in the class online. If the class is full, refer to the additional study locations available on campus.
When you view your eStudent “My Timetable”, you will see two classes side by side with a green tick in each corner, just like in the image below. You don’t need to do anything further except decide each day whether you attend the class on-campus or online.
In the timetable example below, this student is enrolled into a Townsville internal Flex Subject. This student can attend the workshop for this class either on campus or online Monday at 10:00am or 11:30am, or online Thursday at 11:00am. Alternatively, if the lecturer has recorded the class, this will be available via the LearnJCU subject site to view.
Contact the Student Centre and they will be able to help you with any clashes or issues.
If you are in a course that is not the Bachelor of Arts but are doing one of the nominated Flex subjects in SP2 2023, you will have access to the JCU Flex option for that subject.
If you choose to undertake all your classes online, this will be considered external study when meeting the requirements for benefits or rules which require you to be enrolled internally. For instance, if you have or want a Tertiary Transport Concession Card, you must be enrolled full time and undertaking your classes on campus.
No, you only need to attend one flex workshop per week for each JCU Flex subject you are enrolled in. You can choose how you wish to attend that workshop each week, either online, on campus or by watching the recording via the LearnJCU subject site if available.
Yes, assessment activities are the same whether you choose to participate by attending on-campus or online. Details of your assessment activities are found in the subject outlines.
We will be reviewing this initial roll-out and seeking your feedback to determine how we can make this the best experience for students moving forward. This means we want to hear from you, during, and after your experience of JCU Flex, and will keep you updated about the future of JCU Flex.
If you are attending live sessions online you will need to ensure you have stable internet connection, a web cam and microphone.
Yes, All JCU students have access to student support services.
JCU Flex classrooms are monitored by Occupancy sensors located in the corner of the classroom. The sensors detect space movement and capacity using number and dot sightings. No personal images, information or profile is captured or tracked.
Occupancy sensors are a temporary non-intrusive solution to passively support Flex classroom availability and will be removed at the end of the first teaching period. Further information or queries can be directed to spacemanagement@jcu.edu.au.
If your question is not listed above, please submit it below and we will respond to you.
