Class Registration Explained
After you've enrolled in your subjects, the next step is class registration. This is where you will choose the specific class times you'll attend for each subject.
To help you plan ahead, you can view all available classes in My Timetable once the timetable is published for that study period/trimester. Please note that on My Timetable, the class locations display in the order: Building number, Room Number.
Once class registration has opened and you have registered in your classes, you can view your personalised timetable by using the JCU App or MyStudent. Please note that the class location order displayed on your personalised timetable is Room Number, Building Number, Location.
For detailed instructions on how to use MyStudent for class registration, refer to the Registering for Classes section below.
Do I need to Register in Classes?
Depending on the course or subjects you’re enrolled in, class registration is completed in one of two ways, self-registration or managed registration. Opening dates for class registration are outlined below in the Class Registration Schedule for each study period and trimester.
Self-Registration:
You will be automatically registered into classes where there is only one class available. Where there are repeat classes available, you will need to select one of those classes to attend for the entire study period/trimester. You cannot switch between classes once you’ve registered or after class registration has closed. Subjects that require you to select a class will have a ‘Register’ or ‘Change’ button next to the subject information in MyStudent.
*Note: Flex subjects are included, for more information about Flex classes, click here.
Managed Registration:
Students in some courses and subjects cannot self-register and will be registered into their classes by the Scheduling Services Team. These are:
- Veterinary Sciences
- Dentistry
- Medicine
- HS1003
- PS1001, PS1002, PS2002, PS2003, PS2004, PS2005, PS3001, PS3002, PS3003, PS4003, PS4004
- RH1002, RH1004, RH2002
*Registration for these courses and subjects will be completed by the Scheduling Services Team by O-Week.
Registering for Classes
How to Register for Classes in MyStudent
- As a new student or returning student, you must complete your subject enrolment before registering for individual classes.
- Use 'My Timetable' to plan your classes ahead of class registration opening.
- Class Registration is completed in MyStudent. For step-by-step instructions and help, see the Completing your class registration section below.
- It is your responsibility to ensure that you have correctly registered in all classes relevant to your enrolment.
- The JCU App will give you single sign on access to JCU systems and applications like MyStudent and LearnJCU as well as up to date personalised class and exam timetables. It's available for desktop, apple and android computers, laptops and devices.
When you access MyStudent, select the trimester/study period you wish to class register for from the My Class Registrations tile on your home dashboard. This will display the subjects you are enrolled in and are open for registration. You may find that some classes are already allocated for you. This happens when there are no alternative class options available. Each subject will show a registration status beside it:
| Red circle with exclamation mark | You are not yet registered. This may also indicate a class is at capacity. |
| Orange group | You are on the waitlist for a class. |
| Green circle with tick | You are registered in a class. |
Follow these steps to register for your classes
- Click Select next to the subject availability.

- Click on Register:

- View on Calendar highlights the activity in the Preview calendar section on the right:

- Once registered, the class will show a green YOUR CLASS box underneath the description, and you will see a green tick next to the class on the calendar preview field:

If you wish to change a class you have registered for, you can swap classes by clicking Change for the selected subject.
Class Registration Open and Close Dates
For those classes you have not automatically been registered into, class registration will open at 10:00am on the dates noted below.
You will need to complete self-registration for each study period or trimester between the respective open and close dates. If class registration has closed, please contact the Student Centre for any class registration changes.

FAQ'S
If you chose an elective subject outside your recommended study plan, you may experience a clash between some of your classes. You may also experience a clash between your core classes if you choose a group that has not been allocated for your course.
If you have a clash with one of your elective classes, you should:
- Discuss this with your subject coordinator in the first instance. If your coordinator agrees that you can still be registered in that class, contact the Student Centre providing your coordinators approval, OR
- Change your subject enrolment (for elective subjects only), OR
- Contact the Student Centre for further assistance if you are unable to change your enrolment.
If you have a clash with one of your core classes, you should:
- Contact the Student Centre for further assistance.
If classes registration is closed, your enrolled subjects will not appear in MyStudent, My Class Registrations.
Classes may appear closed for the following reasons:
- Class registration has not yet opened. Click HERE to view the opening dates for class registration.
- Class registration has already closed. Click HERE to view the closing dates for class registration. If class registration has closed, please contact the Student Centre for assistance.
- Your class registration is managed by Scheduling Services. For students studying Medicine (Years 1 to 3), Dentistry or Veterinary Science, your class registration will be managed by Scheduling Services. You only need to enrol in your subjects as classes will be allocated for you. However, you will still need to register in classes for any elective subjects separately.
If a class is full and no wait list is available, you will see the class Details button:

In this situation, you should:
- Select an alternate class that is not full for the same activity, or
- Change your subject enrolment if you are unable to make it to an alternate class (for elective subjects only), or
- Contact the Student Centre for further assistance if you are unable to change your enrolment.
If classes are full, you may be able to place yourself on a waitlist. A Class full, waitlist available message will display if a waitlist is available:

Click on the Waitlist button to add yourself to the waitlist for that class.
You can view your waitlist status (i.e. position number) on the subject's class:

Calendar view:
![]()
If you are still on a waitlist when your study commences, please contact the Student Centre for assistance.
Streamed classes are when two or more classes for a particular subject are linked. Selecting a stream will register you into all classes associated with that stream.
Streamed classes, where a selection is not made:

To make a selection for a stream, go to the subject heading and select Change:
Choose from the streams by selecting Register:

You should then see the Class Stream Summary. Click Ok to confirm your registration.

Your chosen stream will display a green YOUR STREAM message in the Stream options window and a green tick next to it in the Class Registration home window.

Weekly teaching patterns show the day, date, time, room number, building number and campus for each week of your class.
This information is useful because:
- Your class may not run every week, as there may be scheduled breaks in the timetable.
- Some classes may change day, time, or location for one or more weeks.
