Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Financial and Administrative Matters
We understand that navigating financial assistance can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to help! The Fees and Financial Support page outlines the fees you need to pay and provides guidance on how to pay or defer them.
You’ll also find information about accommodation assistance, scholarships you or your family might be eligible for, and support for any Centrelink questions you may have. Let us guide you through the process to make it as stress-free as possible!
We encourage you to explore the Scholarships page, where you’ll find a variety of opportunities for JCU Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. These include scholarships based on study areas, postgraduate research, Commonwealth scholarships, and more. Before applying for multiple scholarships or if you’re receiving Centrelink assistance, ensure you check the eligibility criteria for each one to confirm what you qualify for - we can help you with this.
JCU offers a variety of transport and parking options, including discounted public transport for students. JCU's transport and parking page has information about public transport and concessions, as well as parking on campus and bicycle travel.
Preparing Academically
Once you’ve been accepted into JCU, click here to follow the step-by-step process to enrol and activate your student account. You can also find more details about upcoming enrolments on JCU’s enrolment page. If you’re feeling unsure or get stuck, don’t worry - that’s what we’re here for! Reach out, and we’ll be happy to assist you.
The subject outline for each subject, available in your LearnJCU site, is a comprehensive guide that details what you’ll learn, the skills you’ll develop, and how to access resources for success. It includes essential information about assessments, expectations, penalties for non-compliance, and contact details for your lecturers or tutors.
Understanding the subject outline is critical to achieving your academic goals. To deepen this understanding, schedule sessions with the Indigenous Peer Assisted Learning (IPAL) Tutoring Program as early as possible in the study period. This proactive step gives you the time and opportunity to thoroughly navigate and master your subject requirements. Your Academic Support Advisor will be reaching out to you to connect you with a tutor best suited to your needs, ensuring you feel confident and prepared.
If you haven't applied through QTAC, you'll need your Tax File Number (TFN) and Unique Student Identifier (USI) to submit the necessary Commonwealth Assistance Forms.
Once you've accepted your offer, the next step is to enrol in your subjects. Setting up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to verify your student identity will give you access to JCU platforms and resources. If you need assistance, the IT Help Desk is available to help. If you haven't applied to JCU yet, click here to start the application process.
JCU students are required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSA Fee) to access JCU’s facilities and resources, including online services. If you need assistance with this or would like to defer the fee, we’re happy to guide you through the process. Failure to pay by the due date will result in sanctions and your grades being withheld. The payment due date is outlined in the academic calendar, which depends on whether you are enrolled in a trimester or semester.
Our Academic Support Advisors will reach out to ensure you feel confident with the process, but if you encounter any issues, feel free to contact us. It’s completely normal to feel uncertain at first, and we’re here to assist you every step of the way!
We offer a variety of services and resources to help you succeed no matter where you’re studying, whether at the Bebegu Yumba (Townsville) campus, Nguma-bada (Cairns) campus, a regional study centre, or as an off-campus student. You’ll have access to academic support, career guidance, well-being resources, and more. From personalised tutoring sessions to workshops on time management, study skills, and exam preparation, we’re committed to supporting you every step of the way. We’re here to help you succeed and achieve your goals - no question is too big or too small!
To help you prepare, the IERC offers the Indigenous Peer Assisted Learning (IPAL) tutoring program, specifically designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at JCU. Through IPAL, you’ll build confidence in your subject material and assessments. We know university life can be challenging, so we’ll work with you to manage your schedule and balance academic commitments, making your experience more manageable.
To understand the requirements of each subject, you’ll need to access your subject outlines. The Subject Outline serves as a roadmap for your learning journey. It contains key information such as your subject coordinator’s details, assignments, teaching methods, and requirements for passing. Think of it as your guide to success! You can find the Subject Outline for each subject on the subject's LearnJCU site.

This service operates during and after hours, or you can leave a message for an email response. Just make sure you always type in your student email address when prompted.
Additionally, the online Learning Centre offers resources and workshops covering academic reading and writing, chemistry and maths refreshers, and basic statistics. These workshops are free and frequently featured during orientation, helping you build the skills needed for academic success.
Always start from the Library's website to ensure you’re authenticated as a JCU user. There's the Student Portal, which includes FAQs on readings, referencing, borrowing, and academic integrity, plus liaison librarians who are available to assist you for discipline-specific support.
The Library also offers an interactive learning tool to help you explore its services and find information for your assignments. Additionally, "how-to" guides, subject and discipline-specific resources, video tutorials, and scheduled workshops can all be accessed through the Library's website.
If you need further assistance, Library staff are available in person, via online chat or form, and by phone. Online resources, including eBooks and scholarly journal articles, are accessible 24/7. To view full-text content, you’ll need to log into One Search, whether you’re on or off campus.

Some on-campus residences, such as Rotary International House and Burralga Yumba in Townsville, and John Grey Hall in Cairns, are self-catering, meaning meals are not provided. These accommodations feature fully equipped communal kitchens where you can prepare your own meals. For other residences, meal plans may be available, depending on the specific location.
Full board accommodation options provide three meals per day, seven days per week.
To find out what's available, check out the Townsville and Cairns accommodation options. We can also help you with questions you might have and talk you through what you need to know.
Security officers regularly patrol the residences to help maintain a safe and secure environment. They’re there to assist with any late-night issues and ensure everyone follows the residence policies. Students can reach out to the Pastoral team or a Security Officer for support anytime, day or night, giving residents a sense of safety and parents back home peace of mind.
All residences supply a mattress protector, but students will need to bring their own linen. Linen packs can be pre-ordered from your residence before you arrive. The John Flynn College and Saints Catholic College also provide bed linen.
Don’t forget to bring your own towels, as these are not supplied. Each residence has laundry facilities available for students to wash their belongings.
Bringing your own computer is recommended, or you can purchase one locally after you arrive. Printers are available through the JCU network for your convenience.
For more information, visit JCU Accommodation and explore the accommodation FAQs.
Packing and Essentials
Set yourself up for success with thoughtful organisation. Your backpack or bag should contain:
- A laptop or tablet for taking notes and accessing course materials.
- A backup notebook and reliable pens - technology can sometimes fail at the worst moments!
- Any textbooks or readings you need for the day.
- A water bottle to stay hydrated.
- Healthy snacks to keep you going between classes.
- A planner or calendar to track assignments and deadlines.
If you're missing any writing materials or even wanting a snack, IERC can help! We offer study planners and starter packs throughout the semesters and trimesters. These starter packs include essential items in a clear pencil case - perfect for when exam time comes!
The IERC has computers available for student use and private rooms for studying or tutoring sessions. Using your student card, you have access to these resources not only during work hours but also after hours and on weekends.
Before your classes it's important to:
- Review your notes from previous classes and skim the upcoming material to prime your mind for learning and better engage with lectures. Printing your lecture notes beforehand is a good idea, and you can access printers at the IERC.
- Arrive early to find a seat where you can see and hear clearly - this simple habit can greatly improve your focus and participation.
Engage actively in your classes by asking questions and contributing to discussions. It’s not just about improving your grades; it’s about exploring ideas, developing your own perspectives, and sharing your unique experiences with your peers. Your voice is a valuable part of the learning environment.
Remember, you belong here. While laptops or tablets are not mandatory, they can be very useful for your studies. The IERC also offers computer facilities available during and after university hours for student use and JCU provides computer rooms across campuses. These resources give you plenty of options for accessing technology on campus, so you’re not reliant on personal devices.
You’re welcome to use your own device, and JCU has helpful guides to assist you with setting it up, including connecting wirelessly, virus protection, using Zoom, and printing on campus. Be sure to check out the JCU Student IT Essentials page for more details about managing your account, email, the Student App, and Learning Online. Having access to prescribed textbooks and readings is key to your success as a student. These resources provide the knowledge and tools you need to excel in your subjects and keep up with course materials. Without them, it can be harder to understand the content, complete assignments, and prepare for exams. Make getting your textbooks a priority, whether through purchase, second-hand options, or borrowing from the library.
JCU Library is committed to reducing costs for first-year students through the Textbook Affordability Project (2024–2025) and is actively working to identify free or low-cost textbook alternatives. This ensures students have access to essential resources without financial strain.
You can access all your subject readings and resources, including textbooks, journal articles, and videos, through the Readings list on your LearnJCU subject site. Most subjects will require at least one textbook, and you can find the list in your subject outline. You can buy textbooks online from Booktopia or find second-hand copies on StudentVIP. Some editions may be available to borrow from the JCU Library. The IERC also has a small library that you can use while you're in the Centre at both the Bebegu Yumba (Townsville) and Nguma-bada (Cairns) campuses.
As you prepare for exams, the IERC is here to support you every step of the way. We understand that this time can be challenging, and we want you to feel confident and ready. Social Preparation
Our Orientation and Welcome Days (at the top of this page) are a great way for you to meet people before the study period begins. JCU also has O-Week which provides you with opportunities to meet people while you're exploring JCU's campuses.
Our Indigenous Peer Assisted Learning (IPAL) Tutoring Program is not only an academic resource but also a fantastic way to build your social network at JCU. By connecting with a tutor who understands student life, you gain insights into balancing academics with social activities. IPAL sessions often create a supportive space where students share experiences, study tips, and even recommendations for clubs, events, and community groups. This connection helps foster friendships and a sense of belonging while enhancing your academic and personal growth.
We have created a web page for our students so they can build and expand their social circles. Here at the IERC, we host BBQs multiple times each trimester, offering a chance to enjoy free food while meeting new friends. Stay updated on all activities through our Facebook and Instagram pages.
You can join the Townsville Indigenous Student Association, which holds weekly group study sessions and social or cultural events. Additionally, the JCU Student Association offers clubs, sports, and events for anyone looking to connect and build support networks.
