VPN for Mobiles

These instructions will help you set up your Apple iPhone, iPad or Google Android device to connect to the JCU VPN service.

Apple iOS

Start by turning on your device (if it’s not already on) and make sure you are connected to Wireless or a 3G/4G mobile network before you start.

  1. Download and Install the FortiClient from the App Store (iOS version 9.0.0 or above)
  2. Launch the FortiClient app

If you receive a prompt “FortiClient would like to Add VPN Configurations” tap Allow

  1. Select Connections and then tap Add Configuration…
  2. On the Add/Edit VPN screen enter the following:
    • Name: JCU
    • Host: vpn.jcu.edu.au/full
    • Port: 443
    • User: enter your JCU email address
  3. Tap Save
  4. Select VPN to return to the main screen
  5. Now tap the VPN Slider to toggle the JCU VPN connection on or off
  6. You'll be prompted for your password, enter your current JCU password
  7. When asked to save password we recommend you don't for security reasons.

Note: Do not enable the Web Security Settings or FortiClient Telemetry. They are not required for the JCU VPN service.

Google Android

Start by turning on your device (if it’s not already on) and make sure you are connected to Wireless or a 3G/4G mobile network before you start.

  1. Download and Install FortiClient VPN from the Google Play Store (Android version 4.4.3 or above)
  2. Launch the FortiClient VPN app

If you receive a prompt “Please grant permissions for: Access Storage for importing Configuration files.” tap OK

  1. On the Add/Edit VPN screen enter the following:
    • Name: JCU
    • VPN Type: SSL VPN
    • Server: vpn.jcu.edu.au
    • Port: 443
    • Username: enter your JCU email address
    • Password: enter your current JCU password
  2. Tap the Back Arrow (top left corner) to return to the main menu
  3. Now tap the Connect button to authenticate to the JCU VPN connection (if this is your first time connecting you may be prompted for your JCU password)
  4. If prompted to accept a Connection Request from the FortiClient VPN app to monitor network traffic tap OK
