Services for students

The Learning Centre provides services intended to support the success of all students at JCU. This includes supporting the student’s transition to university, aiding the development of the students’ independent learning skills, and the provision of integrated peer support strategies. Some of the ways in which student are supported include:

  • Sharing transition strategies to help students adjust to university life.
  • Developing study skills such as organisation and planning, time management, and study strategies.
  • Learning strategies to understand, plan, write and refine their assessment tasks, and to prepare for quizzes, tests, and exams.
  • Supporting numeracy (maths and statistics) and literacy (reading and comprehension) and language development for English as Second Language (ESL) students (writing and oral language).
  • Promoting and enabling positive peer relationships.

The Learning Centre provides advice for students through individual consultations, Peer Assisted Study Sessions, and student mentors. Individual consultations can be accessed through the Peer Learning Assistants, Learning Advisors and Studiosity. PASS classes and student mentors provide group and peer level support throughout the study periods.

Experienced and high-achieving student peers provide a drop-in service to support you with tips for starting your learning journey, managing your time, planning your study, unpacking assessments tasks, and academic writing. The Peer Learning Assistants can be found in the JCU libraries in Townsville and Cairns.

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) is a FREE academic support program for students. The highly successful program operates in universities across Australia and commenced at JCU in 2014 in selected subjects.

PASS provides a casual, friendly and active learning environment where students can work together to better understand the content and learning objectives for a subject. The study sessions focus on integrating course content (what to learn) with academic reasoning and study skills (how to learn).

Students who consistently attend PASS sessions are shown to attain higher results than those who do not participate.

The JCU Student Mentor Program matches experienced student mentors with commencing undergraduate students from the same course of study.

All mentors are successful undergraduate students, who remember what it's like to be a new student. They're trained and supported to share their knowledge and experience with new students and help them progress through their first study period at JCU.
