To reduce the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on your academic results, a variety of changes have been introduced to the GPA Grading System. For more information, please read the Academic Safety Net page, which is a part of JCU’s Student Success Support Package.
The Grade Point Average is a calculation of your average grade or result. This can be calculated on a yearly basis, or for your course as a whole. It is calculated on the following basis:
Each result is assigned a number known as the grade point.
The higher the result, the higher the corresponding grade point.
Grade points for some of the most common results are as follows:
Result | Grade Point |
---|---|
High Distinction | 7 |
Distinction | 6 |
Credit | 5 |
Pass | 4 |
Fail | 1.5 |
Examples
If you complete two subjects (both worth 3 credit points) and receive a Credit in one and a Pass in the other, then your Grade Point Average will be 4.5.
If your subjects have different credit point values (for example, one 3-credit-point subject and one 6-credit-point subject) this is taken into account in calculating your GPA to a formula. If you received a Credit in the 6-credit-point subject, and a Pass in the 3-credit-point subject, then your GPA will be 4.66. This is calculated with the following formula:
(subject credit points x grade point) + (subject credit points x grade point)
_______________________________________________
Total number of credit points for all subjects
This is the calculation for Example 2:
(6 x 5) +(3 x 4) _____________ | = | 30 + 12 ____________ | = 4.66 |
(6 + 3) | 9 |
