This southern end of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area supports both lowland (Broadwater) and upland rainforest. James Cook University maintains a laboratory and accommodation for researchers, staff and students in the village of Paluma, approximately at an altitude of 980 m. Many graduate students have contributed to long-term research on rainforest streams and nutrient status involving flora and fauna. Undergraduate students from a number of disciplines regularly visit the area.
