Intent

Adjunct and Full Academic Titles provides a mechanism for formally recognising suitably qualified and experienced individuals who have a close association with, and make a significant contribution to, the academic activities of JCU in a largely volunteer capacity on an ongoing basis.

Scope

The Procedure applies to Academic Adjuncts, Professional/Clinical Adjuncts, and Full Academic Title Honorary Appointees.  The Procedure may also apply to recent JCU Higher Degree Research (HDR) graduates requiring ongoing access to University resources to publish their Research.

Definitions

Except as otherwise specified in this procedure, the meaning of terms used in this procedure are as per the Human Resources Policy Glossary.

Procedure

1. Nomination and Appointment Process

  1. A JCU staff member may invite an individual to nominate for an Honorary Appointment, or, the individual may initiate the nomination process themselves.
  2. Nominations for Honorary Appointments will be assessed by the relevant JCU Honorary Review Committee. The following information is required by the Committee:
    1. A completed Appointment Form;
    2. A written recommendation from the relevant Academic Head;
    3. Written endorsement by the Dean/Director;
    4. A recent Curriculum Vitae (CV);
    5. Any other requisite documentation stipulated (including, for instance, registration certification, evidence of malpractice insurance, referee details as requested).
  3. The nomination is remitted through the College Dean/Director to the Divisional Honorary Review Committee or the University Honorary Review Committee as applicable.
  4. The Divisional Honorary Review Committee will consider nominations to the following Appointee classification levels, in accordance with the Position Classification Standards detailed in the Honorary Appointments Policy.
    1. Academic Adjuncts
      • Adjunct Lecturer – Level B
      • Adjunct Senior Lecturer– Level C
      • Adjunct Research Associate– Level A
      • Adjunct Research Fellow– Level B
      • Adjunct Senior Research Fellow– Level C
    2. Professional/Clinical Adjuncts
      • Adjunct Lecturer (Professional or Clinical) – Level B
      • Adjunct Senior Lecturer (Professional or Clinical) – Level C
    3. Full Academic Titles Honorary
      • JCU Lecturer – Level B
      • JCU Senior Lecturer – Level C
      • JCU Research Associate – Level A
      • JCU Research Fellow – Level B
      • JCU Senior Research Fellow – Level C
      • JCU Lecturer (Professional or Clinical) – Level B
      • JCU Senior Lecturer (Professional or Clinical) – Level C
  5. The Divisional Honorary Review Committee shall be constituted as follows:
    • Deputy Vice Chancellor (Chair);
    • Dean/Director of the College/Directorate/Centre/Institute impacted by the proposed nomination
    • Director, Academic Quality and Strategy of the applicable Division
    • Director, Research Development
  6. The Divisional Honorary Review Committee will consider the nomination and make a recommendation to the relevant delegate (as recorded in the Human Resources Sub-delegations Register) for their final approval.
  7. The University Honorary Review Committee will consider nominations to the following Appointee classification levels in accordance with the Position Classification Standards detailed in the Honorary Appointments Policy.
    1. Academic Adjuncts
      • Adjunct Associate Professor– Level D
      • Adjunct Professor– Level E
      • Adjunct Principal Research Fellow– Level D
      • Adjunct Professorial Research Fellow– Level E
    2. Professional/Clinical Adjuncts
      • Adjunct Associate Professor (Professional or Clinical) – Level D
      • Adjunct Professor (Professional or Clinical) – Level E
    3. Full Academic Titles
      • JCU Associate Professor – Level D
      • JCU Professor – Level E
      • JCU Principal Research Fellow – Level D
      • JCU Professorial Research Fellow – Level E
      • JCU Associate Professor (Professional or Clinical) – Level D
      • JCU Professor (Professional or Clinical) – Level E
  8. The University Honorary Review Committee shall be constituted as follows:
    • Provost (Chair);
    • Deputy Vice Chancellor (DTHM)
    • Deputy Vice Chancellor (DTES)
    • Director HR
    • Dean College of Medicine and Dentistry
  9. The University Honorary Review Committee will consider the nomination and make a recommendation to the relevant delegate (as recorded in the Human Resources Sub-delegations Register) for their final approval.
  10. Committee Chairs may elect to seek further advice (eg. from external assessors) to assist in determining the nominee’s suitability for the appointment and the most appropriate classification level in accordance the Position Classification Standards detailed in the Honorary Appointments Policy.
  11. The relevant Committee will make a recommendation regarding the nominee’s suitability for the appointment and the appropriate classification level for consideration and approval by the relevant delegate as per the Human Resources Sub-delegations Register. Upon approval, an Appointment Letter will be sent to the Appointee, and following their acceptance, the appointment details will be recorded in the JCU Human Resources System.
  12. Honorary Review Committees shall meet on a quarterly basis to consider proposed nominations.
  13. Out of session appointments may be considered at the discretion of the Committee Chair.

2. Period of Appointment

Appointments will normally be made for periods of up to three years and may, in certain circumstances, be renewed subject to s.3 below.

Where an Adjunct and/or Full Academic Title Appointee is expected to contribute to the education of Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students in a principal advisory capacity, the appointment may be up to five years in duration as is necessary to span the expected duration of HDR candidature.

Adjunct and/or Full Academic Title appointments will automatically lapse at the end of an appointment term or if the Appointee is otherwise employed on a regular and consistent basis by the University.

3. Reappointment

Appointees to Honorary roles may be reappointed for subsequent terms. The Dean/Director will submit a recommendation for reappointment to the relevant delegate as per the Human Resources Sub-delegations Register..  Approval of reappointment and the length of the term of reappointment is at the discretion of the relevant delegate. Upon approval, an Appointment Letter will again be sent to the Appointee, and following acceptance, the (re)appointment details are extended in the JCU HR System.
