Musaceae

Musa may have been derived from the Arabic word mauz banana, or named after Antonius Musa a physician to Octavius Augustus, first Roman emperor. Large herbs with a pseudostem arising from a rhizome, ‘stem’ formed by the overlapping leaf-sheaths. Leaves with a distinct midrib and lateral veins. Inflorescence a terminal raceme; ovary inferior, fruit an elongate fleshy berry.
