Pontederia was named after Giulio Pontedera (1688-1757), Professor of Botany at Padua. Aquatic herbs, leaves usually well-developed, alternate or whorled. Flowers regular to irregular, 3-merous. Carpels 3, fruit dry usually a dehiscent capsule.
