Santalum, from the Persian name for this tree shandal or sandal. Trees, shrubs or herbs or climbers, sometimes semi-parasitic; leaves well-developed or much reduced, opposite or alternate. Perianth sepaline or petaline usually 4-5 parts. Carpels 2-5 usually 3, ovary superior, 1-locule; fruit a drupe or nut, 1-seeded.
