Sapotaceae

Sapote, from Latin sapo soap, saponins are present which foam when mixed with water. Trees and shrubs, latex usually present maybe sparse; leaves alternate, simple, often obovate, leathery, hairs if present bifid. Flowers with a distinct calyx and corolla, stamens epipetalous, staminodes present. Fruit fleshy, a firm berry, seed testa usually with a very distinct hilum.
