Araceae

Arum is the classical Greek name for these plants. Monocotyledons; perennial herbs, rhizomes, tubers, adventitious or aerial roots maybe present. Leaves usually with a distinct petiole and leaf blade, venation usually reticulate. Raphides as well as a watery or milky exudate commonly present. Inflorescence is a spadix surrounded by a spathe. Fruit fleshy. Pollination is by insects, chiefly flies who are attracted to the inflorescence by the smell and promise of  food or a brood site (deceit pollination) and in many species they are trapped and subsequently released with a new pollen load.
