Cucurbita is a classical Latin word for a type of gourd. Mostly vines often climbing by tendrils which are tightly coiled. Plants have a distinctive odour. Leaves alternate, simple or compound. Flowers functionally unisexual, usually 5-merous, distinct calyx and corolla. Ovary inferior, fruit usually fleshy, usually a berry or pepo (gourd).
