Magnolia was named after Pierre Magnol (1638-1715), Professor of Botany and Director of Montpellier Botanic Gardens, France. Trees or shrubs, often deciduous with alternate, simple leaves, entire or lobed. Flowers are usually solitary, bisexual rarely unisexual, large and showy; perianth of 2+ whorls usually petaloid, stamens numerous, carpels usually numerous; gynoecium apocarpous; fruit various.
