Lecythidaceae

Lecythis is from the Greek lekythos an oil jar, said to be in reference to the pot-like fruit. Trees or shrubs, leaves simple, usually alternate or pseudo-whorled; old leaves usually turning red. Flowers in spikes, racemes or solitary, 4-6-merous, stamens often numerous and prominent. Ovary inferior; fruit often indehiscent, maybe winged.
