Liliaceae

Lilium is derived from the Greek name leiron a name used for the Madonna Lily by Theophrastus and it maybe based on a Celtic name li for whiteness. Many of the genera placed in Liliaceae s.lat. in the Flora of Australia have now been transferred to separate families. This basic monocotyledonous family has regular 3-merous flowers. However, there are many garden plants in this family.
