Vitis, a name used by the Romans for the grapevine. Vines with leaf-opposed tendrils, rarely shrubs (Leea now included); leaves alternate, simple or compound, stipulate. Flowers small with distinct calyx and corolla, 4-5 per whorl. Carpels usually 2 rarely more, ovules 2 per locule; fruit a berry.
