Zingiberaceae

Zingiberi, this was the name that Dioscorides used for ginger, it is apparently derived from an Indian word. Rhizomatous herbs, aromatic; leaves distichous or tufted, simple, leaf sheath open, blade entire. Flowers irregular, bisexual often showy, 3-merous, only 1 stamen fertile others fused to form a labellum. Carpels 3, ovary inferior, style thin and embedded in a furrow in the filament of the fertile stamen; fruit a capsule.
